Welcome to Karen Muska's Instructional Technology Wiki!
We usually think of computers and computer software when we think of instructional technology, but instructional technologies are not limited to computers in the classroom. Instructional Technology describes the integration of all types of technology tools, resources and strategies that are used for teaching and learning such as: document cameras, LCD projectors, interactive whiteboards, computer-based probes, digital cameras, software applications, digital content in a variety of media formats, online resources and electronic tools we have yet to discover.
Students and teachers can use computer software and Internet resources to locate, process, and present information, learn and assess their skills. Students can locate information from millions of sources using a computer, online encyclopedias, databases, and the Internet. Computer applications such as word processing, presentation software, spreadsheets, and databases, and online collaborative tools such as wikis, blogs and other Web 2.0 tools, help students organize, share, and report information. Students can "show what they know" by creating authentic products to report information they have learned and demonstrate concepts and skills they have mastered. Electronic simulations, tutorials, as electronic tutors to improve skills in reading and math.
Teachers can use computers and other instructional technologies to present information they want students to know. They can also use computers to assess students’ learning, identify and report students’ learning needs, and differentiate instruction. We must recognize that to live and learn in an increasingly complex and information-rich society, students must be able to use technology effectively. Combined with sound pedogicial strategies, applicable infrastructure and equipment and access to rich, multimedia resources, technology can enable students to become sophisticated consumers of information and ultimately, lifelong learners.
